Critique:
I do like the composition. You've got the big branch doing two jobs. Firstly it leads the eye from left to right to the main subject of the photograph and secondly it acts as a barrier for the viewer's eye, so it doesnt stray off to the side and the bottom.
The subject is placed nicely at the right third of the image, giving it some dynamics.
The bright sky adds a good backdrop, as it is homogenous and therefore doesnt grab too much attention. It also keeps the eye in the important part of the image, as the human eye is naturally attracted to bright areas. On the other hand, the dark branches add a second framing, without drawing too much interest from the hawk.
Also the use of depth of field is well executed. The main subject is sharp, or at least as sharp as possible under these circumstances, whereas the background is blurred. Thumbs up for for a wide open aperture.
I would have loved for the bird to be even more crispy sharp than it is here. Of course, taking a picture of a wild animal, especially while it's high up in a tree, is always very difficult. However if it would have been possible, I would have taken sever shots, moving the plane of focus just a tiny bit foreward and backward, in order to have one image, that has sharpness spot on.
Also I believe this shot was taken with TTL metered settings, which makes it rather flat in terms of contrast. I'd love for it to have a little more contrast.
Overall the compositional aspects of the image are very well executed, the technical aspects could do with some improvement.
I hope this was helpful!
